For those who love the outdoors and all that it offers, Black River-Matheson is a nature lover's paradise. Our 150+ lakes and rivers, lakes dug out by glaciers millennia ago, and our 300,000+ acres provide beautiful sandy beaches, excellent fishing, boating, hiking, and camping opportunities. For those who prefer more challenging activities, take a canoe trip along the Black River to the Abitibi and Moose Rivers to James Bay, a 12-day trip that one will long remember.
Winter Wonderland
The area offers an incredible variety of activities for winter enthusiasts. With some of the best ice fishing in Northern Ontario and over 384 kilometers of well-groomed snowmobile trails as well as cross country skiing, skating and hockey, there's something for everyone to enjoy here. Throughout the month of February the area boasts many winter events and festivals that are sure to draw a crowd.
Summer Fun
Public beaches are located at Gauthier Lake,Talbock Lake, as well, at the Watabeag Campground. The boat dock in Matheson gives access to the Abitibi de Troyes Provincial Park which offers backcountry canoeing, camping, fishing and nature viewing. We have excellent fishing in our lakes & rivers. There are four (4) playgrounds within the township, as well as a ballpark in Ramore and one in Val Gagné. Val Gagné has a ball tournament every August. There is also an outdoor volleyball area located at Hough Lake. We also have areas for the ATV enthusiast.

Blueberry Picking
We are in the midst of the best blueberry country found anywhere. If you're visiting in the summer plan on enjoying a day picking some of nature's bounty.
Fire Plaque
While browsing about have a stop at Alarie Park to see the plaque dedicated to the 1916 fire.
